What’s the fastest way to lose trust in a new market?

It’s not pricing. It’s not product.

It’s language.

In this episode of The 60 Second Podcast, Matt McCoy sits down with Bryan Montpetit, CEO of Reviver Global, to unpack a simple but often overlooked truth: if your customer doesn’t understand you, they won’t trust you.

Bryan shares a powerful personal story from a vulnerable moment in a hospital that perfectly illustrates what many companies get wrong when expanding globally.

This is a short, sharp reminder that communication isn’t just a function — it’s the foundation of trust.

You’ve worked across cultures and continents. What’s one mistake companies consistently make when trying to expand into new markets?

00:08 – Bryan Montpetit
So I think that one of my personal experiences that I’ve gone through not too long ago was I was actually post-op for a heart surgery, an open heart surgery. And the nursing staff around me at one point as I woke up and I was groggy, I didn’t really know what was going on.

00:23 – Bryan Montpetit
They rushed around my bedside and they were talking to each other in a very animated way. And I was getting very concerned because I didn’t know what was happening.

00:34 – Bryan Montpetit
The language that these people were speaking was Hindi and I don’t speak Hindi. I was very concerned. I actually ended up grabbing somebody and being like, can you please explain what’s going on?

00:46 – Bryan Montpetit
And they continued their conversations in Hindi. I only got a “you’re okay, you’re okay,” but nothing actually to elevate that trust or make me feel reassured.

00:58 – Bryan Montpetit
And although it’s not necessarily a business context, I do think that it does transpose itself to the business world in the sense that if you’re not speaking the language that people understand, then you’ve really got problems.

And your customers are not necessarily going to feel comfortable with you.
