Most startups waste months doing outbound the wrong way.
In this episode of The 60 Second Podcast, Theo Yeung, CEO of The Bullpen, breaks down why mass AI-generated outreach is failing founders and what to do instead.
Rather than blasting 10,000 cold emails and hoping for replies, Theo explains the power of precision sales: small sample testing, real conversations, fast iteration, and refining messaging until meetings become predictable.
If you're a founder trying to land your first customers, this is a masterclass in smarter sales.
00:00 - Matt McCoy:
You talk a lot about precision sales instead of spray and pray outreach. What does precision actually look like when a startup is trying to land its first real customers?
00:03 - Theo Yeung:
Yeah, for sure. A lot of our customers, prior to them being our customers, they would leverage AI. AI is kind of a pretty hot topic right now. So what they would do is get Claude or ChatGPT to write them an email sequence.
00:16 - Theo Yeung:
They click a button, they send it to 10,000 people, and then whoever replied, replies.
00:22 - Theo Yeung:
But in terms of precision sales, what I mean by that is we build a small sample size, we call them, and then we iterate from that.
00:30 - Theo Yeung:
Based on what we learned, one of our customers, we were able to call 150 people. We found out why they weren't interested.
00:39 - Theo Yeung:
We reiterated the message to answer why they weren't interested and then started calling again.
00:46 - Theo Yeung:
We constantly refine the message to the point where I can pretty much guarantee to a certain number of calls we'll book them a meeting plus or minus 5%.
00:56 - Theo Yeung:
So that's kind of how we say we do precision sniper round prospecting.
