What actually changes the trajectory of a business?

In this episode of The 60 Second Podcast, Kyla Smith, CEO of Sunnybrook Welding & Machine Shop Ltd., breaks down the real levers behind scaling a manufacturing company.

From implementing EOS to building the right leadership team, Kyla shares why growth isn’t about one big move - it’s about structure, accountability, and getting clear on what actually matters.

A sharp reminder: if you can’t measure it, you can’t scale it.

So you stepped into the CEO role at Sunnybrook and helped expand operations. What was the first strategic move you made that actually changed the business's trajectory?

00:09 – Kyla Smith
My background being in accounting definitely shaped how I approach all of this. I've always believed if you can't measure it, then you can't scale it. So we had to move away from relying on our gut systems and start implementing some systems. One of which was implementing EOS, helping us to create some structure and accountability across the business, start tracking the right manufacturing KPIs

and at the same time, we expanded our leadership team. We've brought in a few key people like Victor with a strong background

in lean manufacturing, strengthening our business operations and product development, and Lange joining us on the business development side with 30 plus years experience.

So we also went through a strategic program where we were able to focus on our three main pillars of growth. So business development, product development, and leaning our manufacturing to make things more cost effective.

I think those combined are what changed the trajectory of the business. It wasn't a single item, but more so putting the right people in place and getting clear on the strategy.
